Years ago, many years ago, I sat in my first class at Newbold College. I hadn’t been baptised for too long and had so much to learn. I was certain that I was in the right place and doing the right thing.
God had moved me from Coventry, to Great Missenden to Ascot. Each move brought me closer to Newbold College to study Theology. I had no choice. I had been chosen.
That first class was ‘Life and Teachings of Christ’ taught by Dr. Steve Thompson. That first class had this interesting fact that lodged in my mind – and has stayed there all this time. The coming of a messiah figure was prophesied some 40 years before the birth of Christ, and that by a Roman poet. The Gentiles were listening even then.
That Roman, Virgil, was not the only prophet. The Gentiles were listening to prophets.
What do we recognise? When our life is difficult we ought to be taking prophetic writings more seriously. That’s a hint!
That Bible verse I would love you to learn this week. We are to look for the coming in glory of Jesus Christ. What is the prophetic voice there calling us to do?
“For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope – the appearing of the glory of our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.”

A healthy church is one where Jesus comes first. A healthy church is one where the people work together to put Jesus first. One thing we are doing is to join people together to spread that news. Very basically we want you to find a like-minded Christian friend who you will join with to : choose to pray together every day, decide together on a way to serve other people together, to help them grow as Christians - and to invite the Holy Spirit into your life every day. "When the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth His Son, . . . to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons." Gal. 4:4, 5.
The Saviour's coming was foretold in Eden. When Adam and Eve first heard the promise, they looked for its speedy fulfillment. They joyfully welcomed their first-born son, hoping that he might be the Deliverer. But the fulfillment of the promise tarried. Those who first received it died without the sight. From the days of Enoch the promise was repeated through patriarchs and prophets, keeping alive the hope of His appearing, and yet He came not. The prophecy of Daniel revealed the time of His advent, but not all rightly interpreted the message. Century after century passed away; the voices of the prophets ceased. The hand of the oppressor was heavy upon Israel, and many were ready to exclaim, "The days are prolonged, and every vision faileth." Ezek. 12:22.
