"By His humanity, Christ touched humanity; by His divinity, He lays hold upon the throne of God. As the Son of man, He gave us an example of obedience; as the Son of God, He gives us power to obey. It was Christ who from the bush on Mount Horeb spoke to Moses saying, "I Am That I Am. . . . Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you." Ex. 3:14. This was the pledge of Israel's deliverance. So when He came "in the likeness of men," He declared Himself the I Am. The Child of Bethlehem, the meek and lowly Saviour, is God "manifest in the flesh." 1 Tim. 3:16. And to us He says: "I Am the Good Shepherd." "I Am the living Bread." "I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life." "All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth." John 10:11; 6:51; 14:6; Matt. 28:18. I Am the assurance of every promise. I Am; be not afraid. "God with us" is the surety of our deliverance from sin, the assurance of our power to obey the law of heaven."

Desire of Ages, page 24  from the chapter, 'God with us'

I had a short meeting with someone who is currently finding it a struggle to hold onto faith. Apart from saying, “we all go through times like that”, what else is there to say? To be perfectly honest you should now give me a smack and say, “you should be ashamed of yourself. That’s no kind of advice.”

The reading answers some of the need. Jesus is very special,

“As the Son of man, He gave us an example of obedience; as the Son of God, He gives us power to obey."

Go back a bit to yesterday’s reading – you can access it y going to the bottom of the page and using the link there. The obedience is to the law of love, the one that Satan says we can’t obey. It is that law which we can choose to obey – if we choose to decide that we would rather do God’s will than have our own way.

We don’t struggle on through life on our own trusting to our own determination to hang on to faith. We don’t just have a hope in the future. Jesus is there now, giving us the power we need to obey that law of love.

Then there are those very meaningful words at the end of the reading,

” I Am the assurance of every promise. I Am; be not afraid. "God with us" is the surety of our deliverance from sin, the assurance of our power to obey the law of heaven.

My assurance, when I’m a little low doesn’t come from me. My assurance comes from Jesus. He is ‘God with us’ who stays with us. He doesn’t take time off just because Manchester United are playing tonight or because He wants to catch up on the latest episode of Eastenders. We can trust in Him.

The point of this short blog will become clear if you decide to use this reading in the way we intend it. Netherfield Seventh-day Adventist Church believes in healthy churches. You can see what that means if you head to the relevant Healthy Churches page of the website. We also want other churches to be healthy. That means you can join in our campaign to create healthy churches, with healthy people serving the people in those churches.

A healthy church is one where Jesus comes first. A healthy church is one where the people work together to put Jesus first. One thing we are doing is to join people together to spread that news. I would like you to look at our prayer partners page. This will explain how we want you to use this short devotional. Very basically we want you to find a like-minded Christian friend who you will join with to : choose to pray together every day, decide together on a way to serve other people together, to help them grow as Christians - and to invite the Holy Spirit into your life every day. This blog that you will receive every day simply gives a common spiritual purpose. If you are a newcomer and want to join the blog with this object in mind click here

From October 21st this site will continue going through 'Desire of Ages' - but begin to advance rather faster than one paragraph at a time.

Our sister site, at the Upper Room, will progress at a rather slower pace - one paragraph at a time. If you want to head to our sister site for the slower trip through an excellent book you will eventually follow a link to the Upper Room. This will start on October 21st.
