The plan for summer at the Upper Room
The Pastor of a church is very happy when he hears the words, “people are nearer to God”, ”people are excited about …”, “more reverence”, “people are having a very good experience”, “my deeper relationship with God has led to more freedom to talk to my friends about God”, “Her son .. the burden of her heart … embraced her … Mum is now over the moon. God has answered prayers.”
Such were the words used to open a committee meeting to help plan the next stage of church life at Upper Room Seventh-day Adventist Church in Nottingham.
Fernando and Annesi, from Chile, had experience of Dennis Smith’s book, “40 days of prayers and devotions to prepare for the second coming” and encouraged the church leaders to try out the book as a programme for the church. Several meetings later, and nearly 40 days of prayer later with much of the church enrolled in the programme Upper Room church is looking forward to more personal spiritual growth, the opportunity to be equipped for a summer of evangelism and a chance to invite friends to join in a summer of evangelism at Upper Room.
What are we going to be doing?
The focus for the summer will be on reaching new people in our neighbourhood. That means a gentle approach using health. We’ll need to equip ourselves of course. We’ll do that using another of the 40 days of prayer books, “God’s health principles for his last day people”
From the beginning of July we will set out to meet people in several ways. Paul will lead a team meeting people at their doors. Fernando and Joseph will guide another team as we give out literature in our ‘parish’. We will use special materials for this and back this all up with posters and special invitations.
What are we inviting people to do. Our first big event will take place near the ASDA at Hyson Green when we set up a development of the Health Expo idea. We will hire a set of Megalungs for this as a tempter to encourage people to visit our health checks. We aim to provide activities for children. If you click on the link in the previous sentence you can watch a video illustrating the lungs in use on a television programme.
The date for the Megalungs event will be Sunday August 25th.
During the following week we will then hold a week of health meetings at our regular home at Upper Room. The meetings will take place in the evenings and cover a number of issues that affect peoples health. Diabetes, cancer - and family health will feature.
We then conclude the summer of evangelism with a big day of worship to celebrate God's outreach work in us over the summer. This will take place on August 31st.
There are a couple of things you can do to publicise this event. The first is to tell your friends and invite them to come along to our big summer events. To help you we have created a beautiful poster that you can see HERE.
Is that all you say? What happened to our follow up? God has done His usual and provided the answer before the need arose. You have been hearing of the need for a healthy church and the need for Small Groups to develop in the church.
Our new Pastor (from September 2013), Paul Haworth is a master in the area of training and developing Small Groups.
